Le Guin![]() ![]() ![]() Originally “a very bad short story” according to Le Guin, “there was a book in it, and I knew it, but the book had to wait for me to learn what I was writing about and how to write about it. Le Guin called this novel an “anarchist utopia”, a reaction to the Vietnam war. Ostensibly stories for children, they are deeper and wiser than many adult novels. ![]() And with water, and boats, and dragons, “thin-winged and spiny-backed”. There are more Earthsea novels and more adventures, including The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, and Tehanu, all filled with Le Guin’s particular form of magic, which involves giving things their true names. ![]() (Sounds familiar? Le Guin told the Guardian that JK Rowling “could have been more generous” in acknowledging the 1968 novel.) While there, his pride tempts him into the summoning of a “shadow”, a beast that he will try to escape for the rest of the novel, and which thing of darkness he will only overcome by acknowledging as his own. Ged is whisked away by a great mage, Ogion, and studies at a school for wizardry. One of her earliest works, this novel is set in the world of Earthsea, an archipelago of islands, and follows the coming of age of the young wizard, Ged, from the island of Gont. “From the towns in its high valleys and the ports on its dark narrow bays many a Gontishman has gone forth to serve the Lords of the Archipelago in their cities as wizard or mage, or, looking for adventure, to wander working magic from isle to isle of all Earthsea,” begins Ursula K Le Guin, in her ringingly clear register. ![]() 6/28/2023 0 Comments Art in renaissance italy 1350 1500![]() ![]() Good compilations of primary documents are found in Creighton Gilbert’s, Italian Art 1400–1500: Sources and Documents (Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1980 and Carol M. Sabich can’t believe that such an attractive young woman is on the make for him, and initially he is determined to resist. Anna is not quite “drop dead gorgeous,” but she’s close enough. Sabich has engaged in a second affair, this time with a beautiful and witty law clerk 25 years his junior. Many of the same characters are back, including Stern, Molto and Sabich’s son, Nat, who was a little boy during the first case. Sabich, now 60, chief judge of an appellate court and candidate for the state supreme court, is accused of killing his wife, Barbara, a mathematics scholar. Now, 23 years later, Turow has written Innocent, a long-awaited sequel. ![]() In 1990, it was translated to film with Harrison Ford starring as Sabich, whose brilliant defense attorney, Sandy Stern, goes head to head with the unglamorous but canny Tommy Molto. The book was on the New York Times bestseller list for 45 weeks. In 1987, Turow scored big with his first novel, Presumed Innocent, the suspenseful story of Rusty Sabich, a Midwestern prosecutor who finds himself on trial for the vicious murder of Carolyn Polhemus, a young colleague with whom he had had an affair. One of the remarkable exceptions is Scott Turow, the Harvard-educated attorney and prolific author. Not all lawyers are capable of translating legal speak into compelling fiction. ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments Alpha Class by T.S. Paul![]() ![]() Despite these comments I have about the book, it was enjoyable and worth the read. They even mentioned the name of a character from Star Trek without changing that, so I don't see why they changed the name of the show. On the note of Star Wars, I was scratching my head about why the author decided to change the name of Star Wars to something like Galactic Battle and Star Trek to some other fake name. Maybe the term was mentioned near the end of My Ride is a Bitch, and I just didn't like the idea of an empire being formed. I am My Ride is a Bitch and all books before it when I say what books were before this one. Follow us as we have the people in the Etheric Empire setting up a special academy to train the first set of teens on a leadership track. I don't remember the term Etheric Empire appearing in the books before this one, so I was surprised to see it. ![]() Instead, it is just some sort of elite school within the Etheric Empire. Basically, an academy for weres, vampires, and others who may have some link to the etheric. When I heard the name, I immediately thought it was going to be some sort of school where people learned how to use abilities based in the etheric realm. The other thing that I was annoyed with was the name Etheric Academy.
